The Enchantress by Michael Scott

Suprisingly I read a lot this month, thanks to my road trip. Bought few new stuffs too, thanks to Gramedia Sale, up to 70%, I bought maybe, ten (or eleven?) books last two weeks for approximately 200k idr? Anyway, although I read a lot, I can promise you to review all, so here my option for today. The book that I've been waiting for so long.

Synopsis

Danu Talis: The end of the world is near, and Sophie and Josh Newman are reunited under extraordinary circumstances. Who are Isis and Osiris? Are they really who they claim to be? As the end draws near Palamedes, William Shakespeare, Scathatch, Joan of Arc and Saint Germain join the twins of legend as the final battle on Danu Talis begins.

Meanwhile in the city of San Francisco the Dark Elders are gathering to bring about the destruction of human kind. Monsters are being unleashed upon the city and only the immortals Nicholas and Pernelle Flamel, Nicolo Machiavelli, Billy The Kid, Black Hawk and a few elders stand in their way. Will this unlikely group of soldiers be able to save the entire human race from destruction?

Honestly, I've no idea that this book will be THE LAST BOOK from The Secrets of The Immortal Nicholas Flamel series. Thought it's going to be seven books. So I read it without any expectation, and then, bam! Two last chapter, I was like, "Ini udahan ya? Ini buku terakhir ya?" Hahaha.. Dumb me.

Like the other book, this book is only consisted of two days, last days of Nicholas and Perenelle's life. Our favorite characters are on different location and different timeline, fight for what they believe. Sophie and Josh is facing great revelation in their life, Nicholas and Perenelle trying to save lives, Prometheus and Niten is fighting great war and John Dee meeting The Death itself. Meanwhile, Danu Talis will choose its new leader while the old ones is being captured and wait to be executed. Complicated enough, huh?

As a follower of this series, I found this book..... quite disappointing. Of course I enjoy its pace, as usual Michael Scott always write it full speed, we even can't follow it until we reach last page. I enjoy the battle they have, the monsters, but there are some things that I want more.

Like the time travel. Because the timeline is different, I feel bit confusing when I move between chapter, especially short one. And I don't really feel connected to each character, I guess it's the consequence when you have so many great and strong character, but I am really invested to the twin, so I expected more from them. There is a revelation in the end, I am still surprised 'til now, from Josh, but there is nothing for Sophie? Really? It's a hectic, messy ending, I know every one's being busy to take their role in Danu Talis destruction, but please, can we see more from this two?

However, I like the Nicholas and Perenelle's ending. It's bittersweet, but I guess they deserved that. Now I am afraid if I write more, that I will spoil you, so I think I am gonna stop. As a fan, of course I will recommend this one for you, but I really think Michael Scott can do much better than this. Although I know I can't. :p

In the end, can you write two or three more books about this again, Michael? I'd like to know about Abraham, Virginia, Machiavelli, and Billy the Kid. And someone, please, I know Michael explicitly told us that if we read the book carefully, we'll know who The Enchantress is, but can someone enlighten me? I really have no clue (It's a lie, I got suspects, but it will be very nice if you all give me some insights).

AMBA by Laksmi Pamuntjak

I had no idea about this novel, tapi setiap kali ke toko buku, suami selalu tertarik liat novel ini, terus, terus dan terus, sampai akhirnya suatu hari dia pulang bawa novel ini. Nggak aneh juga sih kalo misalnya dia tertarik sama novel ini, karena pada dasarnya suami saya itu adalah pencinta kisah Mahabharata. Di dalam kisah Mahabharata sendiri, Amba merupakan seorang putri Raja yang jatuh cinta dengan Raja bernama Salwa. Salwa yang awalnya akan menikahi Amba, dikalahkan Bhisma dalam satu sayembara, dimana Bhisma sendiri sedang mencarikan istri untuk adiknya, Wicitrawirya, Raja Astinapura. Amba pada akhirnya tidak menikah dengan siapapun karena dia ditolak oleh Salwa, dan Bhisma pun tidak mau menikahinya karena sudah berjanji akan hidup selibat, sedangkan Wicitrawirya akhirnya menikahi adik kembar Amba, Ambika dan Ambilika. Amba pun mati secara tidak sengaja oleh pedang Bhisma dan mengalami reinkarnasi menjadi Srikandi yang pada akhirnya nanti akan membunuh Bhisma dalam perang Baratayudha.

Tragis ya?

Suami saya menggemari cerita Mahabharata, sehingga dia penasaran apa hubungannya cerita tersebut dengan Amba-nya Laksmi Pamuntjak ini? Apalagi tokoh-tokoh yang ada di novelnya ini serupa dengan yang ada di Mahabharata. Ternyata setelah saya baca (akhirnya saya duluan pula yang menyelesaikan novel ini).,ceritanya berbeda dengan yang ada di Mahabharata, tapi tidak kalah menarik!

Sinopsis

Amba, seorang anak guru di Kadipura, Jawa Tengah. Memiliki dua adik kembar bernama Ambika dan Ambilika. Ayahnya gemar membaca kitab-kitab Jawa, salah satunya adalah Serat Centhini. Pada tahun 1960-an, Amba termasuk gadis yang berpikiran modern pada zamannya. Kuliah, meniti karir, dan tidak terburu-buru menikah walaupun orang tuanya sudah kesengsem untuk memiliki menantu sebaik Salwa.

Akan tetapi ketika Amba harus menjalani hubungan jarak jauh dengan Salwa, apa yang terjadi ketika dia bertemu dengan dokter muda lulusan Universitas Leipzig, Bhisma Rashad? Akankah kisah mereka bertautan seperti kisah dalam Mahabharata? Bagaimana dengan nasib Salwa?

Kisah Amba ini diceritakan dengan setting waktu yang beraneka ragam, masa kini, masa kecil Amba, dan masa dewasanya yang dihabiskan pada tahun 1965, ketika gejolak komunis sedang bangkit di negeri ini. Walaupun pada dasarnya cerita ini adalah cerita cinta, bisa dibilang cinta segitiga, akan tetapi penceritaan yang baik tentang latar belakang sejarah yang terjadi pada saat itu, seperti G30S, membuat buku ini semakin menarik. Dari awal buku, kisah diambil dari masa kini, ketika Amba tiba di Pulau Buru, mencari keberadaan Bhisma yang katanya terakhir kali berada di pulau itu. Awal buku sudah berhasil membuat saya penasaran dengan nasib Bhisma, apa yang terjadi dengan Amba dan Bhisma, dan mengapa Bhisma tidak kembali ke Pulau Jawa ketika masa tahanan di Pulau Buru berakhir.

Menurut saya premise ceritanya cukup sering ditemukan, kisah cinta, cinta setiga, cinta terlarang, dengan latar belakang politik, ekonomi dan sosial budaya. Yang membuat buku ini menjadi berbeda adalah gaya bahasa Laksmi Pamuntjak yang menurut saya sangat indah dan misterius. Selain itu, Laksmi berhasil menyisipkan peristiwa-peristiwa penting, hasil riset, yang betul-betul terjadi pada jaman tersebut. Setting waktu pun dibuat maju mundur, antara flashback dan flash forward, sehingga pembaca dibuat penasaran, apalagi sudut pandang yang dipakai pun diambil dari beberapa orang. Selain itu, Laksmi menurut saya sangat berhasil menggambarkan Pulau Buru dengan sangat personal, sehingga kita tahu, tidak ada yang berubah dengan pulau itu walaupun berpuluh tahun telah lewat sejak dijadikan kamp tahanan para tahanan politik. Hubungan Amba dengan keluarganya juga merupakan salah satu back story yang menarik, dimana setiap tokoh keluarganya memiliki karakter yang unik, bapaknya yang pencinta kitab Jawa, ibu Amba yang patuh kepada suami namun diam-diam memiliki kenangan masa lalu yang sampai saat ini membayangi, dan adik kembar Amba, Ambika yang lincah dan pencinta pria, dan Ambilika yang pendiam.

Akhir cerita, kita pun bisa tahu apa yang terjadi dengan Bhisma, dengan Amba yang tidak pernah berhenti mencintainya, siapa tokoh Srikandi yang tiba-tiba muncul di akhir buku, dan bagaimana akhir yang bahagia terjadi wakaupun tidak secara semestinya. Saya sangat setuju dengan tulisan ini, "Laksmi menampilkan sejarah Indonesia yang bengis, tetapi justru dengan manusia-manusia yang mencintai."

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson

Setelah hiatus dari buku yang cukup lama, buku pertama yang membekas di hati saya adalah buku pertama dari Millennium series karangan Stieg Larsson. Penasarannya sebenarnya sudah bercokol cukup lama, apalagi buku ini dinobatkan sebagai best crime novel oleh beberapa pihak. Millennium series ini sendiri terdiri dari tiga buah buku, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl who Played with Fire, dan The Girl who Kicked the Hornest' Nest. Tapi usut punya usut, Larsson awalnya merencanakan agar seri ini terdiri dari 10 buah buku, namun karena kematian penulis yang mendadak, hanya tiga buku yang dapat diselesaikan.

Buku ini dimulai dari seorang jurnalis bernama Mikael Blomkvist yang mendapatkan tuntutan hukum dari seorang pengusaha ternama Swedia karena dianggap telah menulis artikel yang berisi kebohongan dan telah mencemarkan nama baik si pengusaha. Akibatnya Mikael divonis penjara, dan memutuskan untuk mengundurkan diri dari pekerjaannya sebagai editor di majalah Millennium.

Selama masa istirahatnya, Mikael mendapatkan tawaran pekerjaan dari seorang pengusaha bernama Henry Vanger, pemilik dari Vanger Corporation, perusahaan terkemuka di Swedia. Henry Vanger bermaksud mengusut kasus hilangnya keponakan tersayangnya, Harriet, yang telah hilang selama lebih dari 40 tahun yang lalu. Awalnya Mikael menolak, namun karena cerita tentang keluarga Vanger sendiri ternyata menarik untuk dikuak, maka akhirnya Mikael memutuskan untuk tinggal dan membantu Henry untuk memecahkan kasus hilangnya Harriet.

Sementara dibuat terpukau oleh kisah Mikael dan Harriet, kita diperkenalkan dengan satu karakter bernama Lisbeth Salander. Lisbeth adalah seorang penyidik di satu perusahaan keamanan swasta, dengan track record kehidupan yang buruk. Dianggap berbahaya oleh masyarakat, Lisbeth yang awalnya diperkenalkan sebagai anak yaitm, harus hidup dibawah perwalian. Masalah mulai muncul ketika wali Lisbeth yang dapat dipercaya, Palmgren menderita stroke. Lisbeth dipindahkan ke wali yang baru, yang ternyata memiliki sifat abusif.

Lisbeth dan Mikael dipertemukan ketika Mikael mencari asisten riset untuk membantunya dalam kasus hilangnya/pembunuhan Harriet Vanger. Lisbeth yang biasanya bersifat protektif, di luar kebiasaan, menaruh kepercayaan pada Mikael. Mereka pun bersama-sama menyelidiki hilangnya Harriet, dan akhirnya menemukan rahasia-rahasia tergelap dari keluarga Vanger itu sendiri.

Saya adalah seorang fast reader. Biasanya satu buku diselesaikan SELALU dalam satu kali baca, nggak peduli betapa tebalnya buku itu. Saya bukan tipe orang yang biasa menandai novel dengan bookmark, menundanya selama semalam, mulai membaca lagi besok. Saya adalah pembaca yang ngotot, dimana ketika saya sudah membuka halaman pertama dari sebuah buku, saya akan terus-terusan membaca buku itu hingga selesai (dengan istirahat makan, mandi, dan shalat tentunya). Makanya apabila akan memulai membaca buku dengan halaman yang luar biasa banyaknya, biasanya saya memilih weekend, agar waktu saya tidak terpotong. Rekornya sih untuk buku The Pillars of the Earth, waktu mulai membaca adalah jam 9 malam, non-stop hingga selesai jam 12 siang keesokan harinya. :p

Tapi setelah umur bertambah, kewajiban bertambah, ternyata kebiasaan itu nggak bisa dipegang terus-terusan juga ya. Buku ini, dengan banggganya saya katakan, adalah rekor membaca terlama saya. 2 minggu lebih! Itu juga saya diam-diam membaca di sela-sela istirahat kantor, di mobil ketika kunjungan ke lapangan, 15 menit break ketika bosan di depan komputer. Selama 2 minggu, buku ini setia menemani saya kemanapun saya pergi.

Tapi hasilnya memang memuaskan. Plot yang lambat dan detail tidak membuat saya merasa bosan. Narasi yang cukup panjang tentang masing-masing tokoh, malah membuat penasaran terhadap masa depan tokoh tersebut. Karakter favorit? Lisbeth Salander tentunya. Wanita yang sering diremehkan sepanjang hidupnya ini ternyata salah satu hacker ternama di kalangan internasional, dengan otak yang cerdas dan ingatan fotografis. Almost perfect for a heroine, isn't it? Selain itu, masa lalu yang buram, masa depan yang nggak kalah amburadulnya saat Lisbeth terpaksa harus mengalami pelecehan seksual dari wali barunya membuat kita sebagai pembaca penasaran, what's next for her?

Tema yang diangkat oleh Larsson juga merupakan tema yang umum yaitu pelecehan terhadap kaum wanita. Larsson juga mengutip beberapa fakta tentang kekerasan terhadap wanita yang sering terjadi di Swedia. I read somewhere, kalo Larsson ini benar-benar niat melakukan riset dalam penulisan bukunya, sampai dia bergaul dengan kalangan neo-Nazi di Swedia!

Saya sudah selesai membaca buku keduanya sekarang, review menyusul segera. Dan nggak sabar untuk menunggu weekend besok untuk lanjut ke final installmentnya. Kapan giliran kamu? :) 

Sebelas Patriot by Andrea Hirata

Summary
Ikal found an old picture of a man, wore football custome, held shinning champion cup, but looked so sad. He is curious, who he is, why he looks so devastated after winning a game? He asked her mother, but she only told him to put the picture, back to where it belong. Ikal kept it silently, and determined to found out the story of the man in the picture.

Who would have thought that the picture brought old story, which makes Ikal realize that before his father become a poor,ordinary tin miner, he was a hero. A sad story but finally gives Ikal huge spirit to continue his father's struggle to achieve a purpose. Make the world knows Indonesia is here. Make everyone's proud to be an Indonesian. Will he succeed?

Andrea Hirata comes again with his novel, called Sebelas Patriot. While everyone is issuing if Ikal's character is real or not, he still use first perspective in this novel. It doesn't bother me, I haven't got bored with Ikal anyway.
What makes me interested, this novel contains about nasionalism spirit, a thing that forgotten this day. Ikal's story simply tells us how a picture could bring a passion to love his country more. He loves Indonesia with his own way, continuing his father's journey,by playing football. He dreams high, hope someday he could be national player, and defend national team in world championship.

Some part of this stories make me shudder. There's a time that I realize how many times I complain about this country, but have no action about it. The other parts make me sad, remember our football institution's chaos. When some people tries to achieve the best, and make Indonesia proud, some people screw it, staining it with money and politic.

After all, it's a good book. Hopefully you can gain some goodness from this book. And by the way, it comes with a CD, contain songs, written by Andrea Hirata himself. I haven't tried it, but it's said that the songs complete the story. You feel real deal!

Dimsum Terakhir by Clara Ng

Have read various review about this book, and made me curious. Some said it was breathtaking, amazing, some said it was ordinary, too dramatic, way too much. Well, I should read by myself, I think. Thanks to Vixxio, which always provide me with high quality and cheap used books, I got this one with very affordable prize.


So, the story is about Chinese quadruplets, Siska, Indah, Rosi, and Novera. They live separately, busy with their own life, try to deal with their own secret, when suddenly they hear bad news from their father, who lives alone, just companied by two fat cats. Nung, their father suffer by stroke, which requiring them to reunited. When they are forced to live together while taking care of their father, they figure out each other's secret, and try to understand one another.


I loved how Clara could share how beautiful Nung's family is. They share warmth and love among difficulty between Chinese at that time, fight between sisters, health issues, personality, and religion. I feel much love, even when the sisters shouted each other at anger. Love is all I feel from this book. And family bond.


Even, when some problems are way too much, I say we're still able to enjoy this book. Learn how different these quadruplets personality, from the older to younger, Siska with her autonomy, perfectionist Indah, Rosi who likes to talk and fussy, and calm Novera. Their colorful life, Siska, successful business woman, which often travel abroad, Indah, booming writer who has no idea what to write in her second book, Rosi, as her name, a rose farmer, and Novera, teacher who wants to be a nun. Each of them keep secrets, which try to be revealed by Nung, who wants hear truths from his daughter before he dies.


I should admit that I got tearful when I read final chapters. How deep is a father's love, so he can receive his daughters the way they are. How brave Nung face his death after revealing his daughters secrets one by one. Well, I am impressed with this book. Two thumbs up, Clara!

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

Remember her first book who really caught me up? Finally after long waiting, Gramedia Pustaka Utama publishes its sequel, Catching Fire.

WARNING! SPOILER FOR THE FIRST BOOK!!!
Still present Katniss and Peeta as main role, this book take time setting after they both come home as the winner of Hunger Games, and of course still act as young teenagers who deeply falls in love one to another to avoid suspicion from Capital that they only made the love story up for win the Games together. But, it proves that their braveness against Capital's rules in Hunger Games brings out other districts courage. They slowly rise, plan rebellion to the Capital.

Katniss, who only wants to protect her family, is confused about what to do. One hand, she should keep pretending that she's in love with Peeta, for everyone's good, but her hunting mate, Gale, is always imagined in her mind. While wandering blindly, Katniss found that Capital is forcing back all previous winners of Hunger Games who still live, to compete again, in celebrating 75th Hunger Games. It means that she, once again, should compete with Peeta!

How it ends? I really wish I could give you little spoiler, but it will make me such bad reviewer. What I say is Suzanne Collins has successfully built suspense as she did in the first book. The Games turns more cruel, brutal, because it has more competitor. But, she also writes about Young Katniss heart, hesitation when she should choose the path of her future, and not being together with someone she loves. All packages in one book. Good job, Suzanne! I can't wait for last book! :)

Deeper by Roderick Gordon

Summary

After digging through the subterranean world of modern-day London in search of his father, fourteen-year-old Will Burrows ended up on the run from the diabolical Styx army with his best friend, Chester, and his newly discovered brother, Cal.

Remember Will Burrows and his best friend, Cal, who discovered underground life while searching of Will's missing dad? After facing suspense ending in Tunnels, the first book, they come back in Deeper, sequel of Tunnels.

It's hard to say, which one is more interesting between Tunnels and Deeper, but I found many mistery revealed in second book. Here, Will meet his mom, I mean by-blood mom, it will be very exciting and miserable meeting. i can't hardly wait to tell you, but it'll be better if you read it by yourself. And, you'll find another secret about Rebecca, Will's sister, who apparently have a twin! Yes, thay are two people, and both of them have similar evil mind.

Honestly, this book reminds me to Journey to the Center of Earth movie. Remember? Brendan Fraser play his act well, and I was fascinated with its idea, how life can be in deep down there. But, instead of dinosaurus or other ancient animal, there are people living underground in Deeper. People, like us, they build their life, their own mine, shops, home, even government. And, in Deeper, we discover that Colony (it what underground people called) also have caste in society. Styx, as their government, occupy highest position, while they can rule Colony citizen whatever their way. Below Styx, there are Colony, people who live as citizen and must obey all Styx rules.

Deeper tell us, there is another place which is deeper than Colony location. People live there, called Corpolite, working like slave for Styx. They never be reputed as human, even by Colony themselves.

Interesting, I admit. There are many aspects of life, their new philosopy about Topsoil (yes, it's us, people), and you can see how they are living with malice and hate for Topsoil.

Well, the point, it's good book to read. I am on my way reading third book, Freefall, and of course hardly can wait to share my review here!

Five Person You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom

It's not new book, but i just read it about a weeks ago. Well, actually, i got reference from Cassey, one of my favorite blogger to read it, and then it goes.

First chapter has captured me. The story is told beautifully, with careful selection if words. We're brought to watch last life part of Eddie, Head of Maintenance at Ruby Pier, an amusement park. There Mitch goes, he tells sixty minutes to Eddie's death, fifty minutes, thirty.. til we snooped what will occur next. And when finally Eddie approach to his death, we'll taken to Heaven that we'll never recognize before.

What do you imagine of Heaven before? Lovely spacious garden, with colossal palace, where we can dance along the day, have tasty foods, and angels everywhere maybe?
Eddie found that Heaven is not like he was believing earlier. There's no palace, there's no garden, even angels. He just meet five persons, in different but familiar locations. Five persons, who have correlation with his life, whether he aware or not. He learns many precious things, and find what life means for him. And, at last, he'll do similar job, sitting in somebody queue to tell her/his meaning of life.

what makes the book awesome is, Albom puts fresh idea of Heaven. People never imagine it before, they never look Heaven in such of different view. Some fanatics maybe won't agree with it, but i don't think it must be argued. Albom only have unique opinion, and what he believe isn't wrong.

My favorite quote is "That's what heaven is. You got to make senses of your yesterdays".

The Alchemyst by Michael Scott (re-reading)

I've already purchased this book for, err, i have no clues, a year maybe. I got references from a friend, who knows that i really love fiction with a little touch of history. and this book is perfect for it!
The Alchemyst is one of The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series by Michael Scott. He plans to make six books, and i've read two of them. i almost forget about this series, but suddenly i received an email from its publisher (Matahati, publisher from Indonesia, yes, i still read Indonesia-published books, i can't afford imported ones.. :( ), that the third books will be available in next month. so, for refreshing my mind of this book, i decide to re-read the first book, The Alchemyst.

this book sets in our time, modern time, when we've already used iPod, wi-fi everywhere, and we can't live without our twitter account. Life is ordinary for Sophie and Josh Newman, twins from San Fransisco, until they find that owner from bookshop next door, is long-lived man, named Nicholas Flamel, has inordinate power, called magic. Sounds familiar of the Flamel name? yes, for you, Harry Potter maniacs, maybe you remember in The Sorceress Stone, JK Rowling mentions Flamel as founder of Philosophers Stone, stone which makes you live forever, and can transform stone into gold. Yes, he is the one told by JK Rowling, but in this book, you'll find his own story. Later, you'll discover that Newman twins have stiff corelation with Flamel, and they become main role in this story.

What's interesting is, you can treasure many histories in this book. Michael Scoot has modified it become fiction, of course, but still i certainly get excited. For example, you'll find why Great Fire in London happened, the story of Joan of Arc, and the most interesting one, the eternal Nicholas and Perenelle Flamel. Beside that, you'll be featured with swift plot, thrilling action, fascinated characters. even, you'll be curious, is it for real, or just author's imagination.

So, if you feel Harry Potter is less pleasure, and look for more exciting adventures than The Chronicles of Narnia, you should enjoy this ones. I can't wait til February's coming, and they publish The Sorceress!

The Hunger Games by Suzzane Collins

okay. it's time to forget cold blooded Cullen, or appealing Patch. proudly, present Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark from The Hunger Games.

my boyfriend bought it for me two days ago, and i've already glanced at it since a month ago. well, i considered which one should i buy first, between this book or Mitch Albom's Five Person You Meet in Heaven (regrettably, i should choose one), and i pick Mitch Albom's first. But, fortunately, my beloved bf understand how much i wish for this book, and he's going to get it soon! :)

well, i read it slowly. First chapter had caught me enough, it's snooping. They set in future time, they don't mention it clearly when, but in that occasion, they reveal a reality show called The Hunger Games. There are twelve districts at the time, and each must send two teenagers (12-18 years old), a male and a female, to compete at this game. they will be located in waterless field, and they must survive til everybody get killed, and only one person left behind. there's only one winner for a year, it's so clear, that they must kill, or get killed.

Dreadful, watching teenagers must guarantee such as big responsibility. they must keep their lives, while slaughtering everyone else, included their districts partner. it mentioned at the book, that the citizens love to see that show. horrible. i can't stop reading, on and on, til i found who exactly the winner.

it's fiction, and i can't imagine if it happens to our world. but, you'll be exhausted while reading it, and found like it's real. at least, it's turning out to me. so, read. develop your humanity by seeing, that human can do worse thing, even poorer than animal.
